Tennis Etiquette

THE TEN UNWRITTEN RULES OF GOOD COURTMANSHIP

1. PROPER ATTITUDE: Your attitude toward the game can add or detract considerably from both your own and your fellow players' enjoyment of it. Even if you are playing with an opponent you outclass completely, it is in poor taste to act bored and superior. Before you play, greet your opponent in a friendly manner and introduce yourself.

2. KNOW THE RULES; To avoid embarrassment to yourself and to those with who you play, learn and know the official rules of the game. While you do not need to know all the finer points,, you should learn the basic ones. "Friend at Court" is available and should be carried in your tennis bag.

3. DRESS THE PART: Wear appropriate tennis wear. Proper top and skirt or shorts or pants for women, and for men; sleeved shirt, proper shorts or pants. Proper tennis sneakers for both men and women. No cutoffs, no jeans, no tank tops for men.

4. MEET YOUR MATCH: Everyone enjoys the game more if opponents are at least somewhere near the same level of playing ability. An eager beginner would be way out of line to try to set up a match with the club champion. However, if the champ sets up the match, by all means go for it.

5. AVOID STALLING: Because a faster tennis game is more fun to play, it is considered bad form to stall. Knowing the rules as mentioned above means that you know that you get 25 seconds from the cessation of one point to the beginning of the next. On change of sides, you get 90 seconds. It is the receiver's duty to retrieve all balls on her side of the court so that the server has two or three in hand to start each serve.

6. CALLING SERVES; In lieu of an umpire it falls upon the receiver or receiver's partner to plainly call all serves either good or fault. In the case of doubt, you must give your opponent the benefit of the call. The receiver should not touch any service which does not fall good. It is the responsibility of the server to call the score after each point. During a rally, call only the out balls.

7. REPLAY OF FAST SERVICE: Before delivering the service, it is the responsibility of the server to make sure the opponent is ready. When receiving, do not return the ball unless the serve was good. To return an out serve is rude.

8. CROSSING THE COURTS: Before asking players on the next court to return an errant ball from your court, wait until their point is over. In returning a loose ball to another court, pick up the ball and get it directly to one of the players on the first bounce.

9. CONTROL YOUR TEMPER: Keep your temper under control; do not allow things to distract or annoy you. Self control is one of the most important attributes of sportsmanship and successful play. Loud conversation or the use of profanity during the match is inappropriate.

10. CELL PHONES & BEEPERS ON COURT: As a courtesy to all players, all cell phones and beepers should be turned off during the match.
